As Seen on TV: Schedule your Fitness Assessment!
A fitness assessment at Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center will produce a custom workout program for you and help ensure you are exercising within a healthy range for your body.
The assessment will measure your height, weight, blood pressure muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and aerobic capacity. This information is put into the center’s computer, which then prints a report for you and the center to keep a copy.
During the assessment, you’ll also be asked to fill out a health history questionnaire. This questionnaire is useful in discovering what elements to include and what to avoid when designing your custom workout program.
A follow up appointment will be scheduled in three months, to ensure your program is working for you and see if any tweaks are necessary. Another follow up appointment is scheduled at the six month mark to ensure your body is responding in a positive way to your exercise routine.

Tackling Obstacles
We might have best intentions to exercise regularly. But sometimes, life just gets in the way. Meet three members of Fort Sanders Health and Fitness Center (FSHFC) who overcame obstacles that kept them from fitness routines, and are back and stronger than before.Chris Leichtweis As a former Olympic wrestler, fitness has always been an important part of Chris Leichtweis' life.
Chris' professional life became busy when he started his own business, Safety and Ecology Corporation. Building his company became Chris' focus and the gym wasn't a priority for close to ten years.
"My days became longer and I needed more energy. My wife inspired me to get back to the gym and I started working with my trainer, Julie Stelter. She makes exercise fun," said Chris.
"The first month back was a struggle," says Chris. "Now my blood pressure is better than ever and stress-wise, I'm the best I've ever been." Dan Beverly When Dan Beverly learned he was diabetic, work became busy and his mother fell ill.
"Life got in the way and I stopped exercising for five years," Beverly said.
Dan returned to FSHFC and was amazed at what happened after working with registered dietitian Barbara Foster in the Weigh to Go program and training with Kyle Hundley, ACE-CPT.
Did Dan see a change in himself after exercising again? "Absolutely. My blood sugar went down, I lost weight and had an immediate change in how I felt," Dan said.
Fred Marsh Fred Marsh has been a member of FSHFC for 15 years and a runner since 1968. Fred started running mainly to control blood pressure. He eventually developed intense heel pain called plantar fasciitis, an obstacle for any runner.
"Trainers at FSHFC were able to guide me when that happened and also show me different types of exercise," Fred says. "Now I work on strengthening my muscles, which helps give me stronger bones."
Fred still runs and works stretching into his routine. "I'm determined to touch my toes - my grandma always said to 'sit like you have a ramrod up your back'! She lived to be 101, so maybe she had a point there," Fred laughed.

As recently as the past four months, Fort Sanders has compiled winning records in both the Summer and Fall GKTA leagues as well as the USTA BMW Women’s Combo Doubles leagues.
Fort Sanders boasts ten championship or runner-up records just in the 2007 GKTA Summer and Fall season:

In USTA BMW Women’s Combo Doubles leagues play Fort Sanders, under Coach Zach Laycock and Lanny Martin, produced 5.0, 5.5, and 6.5 local championship teams and a local 5.5 runner-up team. All went on to the state competition in Chattanooga the weekend of Oct. 20-21 with the 5.5 teams taking second and third place (the second place 5.5 team will go on to sectionals as a wild card) and the 5.0 and 6.5 combo teams winning their divisions and going on to sectionals in Baton Rouge in January 2008.

Get the Most Out of Your Workout
Did you know that you should change up your workout every two to three months? A personal trainer can update old programs, help with motivation, and assist you in reaching goals that are individual and special to you. From the most knowledgeable exercise expert to a fitness novice, everyone can reap the benefits of personal training.
Resistance training challenges your muscles to change. Benefits of flexibility training include of decreased risk of injury, increased postural awareness, reduced stress, improved range of motion and muscular balance. Cardiovascular training helps you find your optimum target heart. Too high or too low a heart rate can defeat the purpose of all those minutes spent on the cardio machines.
